Why doesn't my photo editor open AVIF directly?

AVIF is recent — Adobe added support in Photoshop 2023. Older versions of Photoshop, Pixelmator, GIMP, and many third-party tools still need PNG or JPG input.

Will the PNG be bigger than the AVIF I started with?

Yes — typically 10× bigger. AVIF is one of the most efficient formats; PNG is fully lossless. That's the cost of universal compatibility.

Does the conversion keep AVIF transparency?

Yes. PNG supports a full alpha channel, and the conversion is 1:1. Every transparent pixel stays transparent.

What about animated AVIF — does the PNG keep all frames?
