About PNG to AVIF conversion
AVIF is the still-image format derived from AV1, the open video codec finalized by the Alliance for Open Media in 2018. It launched in browsers starting 2020 (Chrome) and reached full mainstream support with Safari 16 in 2022. AVIF compresses dramatically better than older formats: roughly 50% smaller than JPG at equivalent quality and 25–30% smaller than WebP, while supporting transparency, HDR, and 10/12-bit color depth. PNG (W3C, 1996) is the lossless legacy standard — every browser and editor reads it, but file sizes are large because no information is ever discarded.
