About JPG to PNG conversion

JPG (JPEG, ISO 1992) is a lossy photographic format that throws away high-frequency detail to keep files small. It's wonderful for storage and delivery, but every save degrades the image a little more. PNG (Portable Network Graphics, W3C 1996) is its lossless counterpart: every pixel is preserved exactly, and the format supports a real alpha channel for transparency. Converting JPG to PNG does not magically restore the detail JPG threw away — any blocky compression artifacts in the source remain in the output. What it does buy you is a lossless container for further work. Editing a PNG, saving, re-opening, and re-saving doesn't compound compression loss the way JPG does. PNG is also the right choice when you need to remove the background and ship an asset with transparency — JPG simply cannot store an alpha channel. The trade-off is file size: a typical 5 MP JPG of 1 MB might balloon to 6–8 MB as a PNG. For archival or editing pipelines, that's an acceptable cost; for delivery on the web, you usually want to convert back to JPG or WebP after you're done editing.
