About PNG to WEBP conversion
PNG (W3C, 1996) is the lossless web standard for graphics, screenshots, and any image where pixel-perfect fidelity and transparency matter. Its main weakness is file size: photographic PNGs balloon dramatically because no information is ever discarded. WebP (Google, 2010) was designed specifically to address that. It offers two modes — lossy and lossless — and both support a full alpha channel, so transparency is preserved either way. Lossy WebP is typically 25–35% smaller than equivalent JPG, and 60–80% smaller than the source PNG when the content is photographic. Lossless WebP is typically 25% smaller than the source PNG, useful when you want pixel-perfect output but a leaner file. Browser support landed across the board years ago: Chrome 2010, Firefox 2019, Safari 14 (2020), Edge 2020. The remaining gotchas are downstream: older email clients and some Office versions can't render WebP, so for documents that will be printed or embedded into legacy software, sticking with PNG is safer. For modern web delivery, mobile apps, and design tools, WebP almost always wins on file size.
