Change the background of a photo by typing what you want

To change the background of a photo, upload the photo to ImgPilot's AI image editor and type the new place in one sentence, such as "Change the background to a beach at sunset". You don't need to cut out the subject. The AI image model keeps the person or product and redraws only the background. This works best for portraits, product shots and travel photos with one clear subject. If the result is off, type the next change in the same chat.

Which prompts work for changing a background?

A prompt that names the new place works. Each before/after pair below is one unretouched run of ImgPilot's AI image editor with the prompt under it. Copy a prompt and swap in the place you want.

  • Move a portrait somewhere better

When to use: a good photo of someone taken in a dull or messy spot.

    Before
The same woman in the same raincoat on a beach at sunset
    After

Change the background to a beach at sunset

  • Try a different trip

When to use: a travel or profile picture where the place matters.

    Before
The same woman standing in front of a turquoise alpine lake
    After

Change the background to an alpine lake

  • Put a product in a scene

When to use: a packshot on plain white that needs a lifestyle setting.

    Before
The same bottle on wet stone among ferns in morning light
    After

Put it on wet stone among ferns, morning light

Step by step

  1. Open the editor and upload your photo

Open the AI image editor and click "Upload image", or the + in the message box. It takes PNG, JPG, WebP or GIF files up to 10 MB. You need an ImgPilot account to upload and edit.

  2. Type the new background

Describe the place in plain words, for example "Change the background to a beach at sunset". Name the time of day or the light if it matters. If the subject must not change at all, add "keep the person exactly the same".

  3. Check the cost and send

ImgPilot shows the credit cost next to the send button before you press it. The default model is GPT Image 2.5 · Sunburst. You can pick another model, or compare up to three models, in the model menu above the chat. One background change usually takes one to two minutes; the beach edit in this guide took 84 seconds.

  4. Compare the result

The edited photo appears in the chat. The side panel keeps both the edited photo and your original upload. Check the edges of hair and clothes, and check that the light on the subject matches the new place. To download the edited photo, click the expand icon ("View larger") and then "Download".

  5. Keep editing in the same chat

If the edited photo is close but not right, type the next change in the same chat, such as "make the sky less orange" or "add a few clouds". The "Continue from v1" button uses the last edited photo as the starting point, so you fix only what is left instead of starting over.

Which photos work best for an AI background change?

  • Works well: portraits, group photos, pets, product shots and travel photos with one clear subject in focus.
  • Works less well: subjects with fine see-through edges, such as veils, smoke or glass, and busy crowds where the subject is hard to separate.
  • Use another tool: for a transparent background, use ImgPilot's Background Remover. For an ID photo that needs an exact solid color, check the color value after the edit, because an AI image model redraws the background instead of filling it with an exact color.

Why does the new background look wrong?

  • The person's face or clothes changed. Add "keep the person exactly the same, only change the background" to the prompt. If an edited photo is close, continue from that photo and fix only the part that changed.
  • The subject looks pasted on. Describe the light of the new place, such as "warm sunset light" or "soft overcast light". The AI image model then lights the subject to match.
  • The new place doesn't look like what you meant. Describe the place in more detail: "a quiet beach with soft waves at sunset" works better than "a beach". Change one thing per prompt.
  • Edges around hair or fingers look rough. Run the same prompt again, or pick another model in the model menu. Each run gives a slightly different result.

Questions

Do I have to cut out the subject first?

No. Upload the whole photo to ImgPilot's AI image editor and describe the new background. The AI image model keeps the subject and redraws the background behind the subject.

Can I make the background transparent instead?

Use ImgPilot's Background Remover for a transparent background. The Background Remover cuts the subject out onto a transparent background. The AI image editor always fills the background with a new scene.

How many credits does a background change cost?

The cost depends on the model you pick. ImgPilot shows the credit cost next to the send button before you send. New ImgPilot accounts get starter credits.

Do I need an account?

Yes. You need to sign in to ImgPilot to upload a photo and run an edit.

Will the person look exactly the same?

Mostly, but not pixel for pixel. The AI image model redraws the whole photo, so small details such as strands of hair or jewelry can shift. Compare the edited photo with your original. If something changed, add "keep the person exactly the same" to the prompt and run the edit again.

Can I use it for product photos?

Yes. Upload the product photo and describe the scene, for example "Put the bottle on a marble counter in soft daylight". Before you use the edited photo in a listing or an ad, check that the label text and the logo did not change.
